Discover SLU Magazine
South Lake Union Seattle lifestyle photography for Discover SLU Magazine.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This was a quick project designed to gather some South Lake Union lifestyle photography. The photos would go into the first issue of Discover SLU Magazine, a small magazine about things to do in the neighborhood included with Seattle Met. I partnered with Portland, OR based media company Sagacity Media on this project.
INSIDE THE PROJECT
The South Lake Union lifestyle shoot took place over the course of one day in late September and used four non-professional models hired by yours truly. Similar to my project with Kilroy Realty, the goal was to create photos that would give viewers a sense of place. I wanted to show how it felt to walk the streets of South Lake Union as a late 20s to early 30s someone who lives and works in the neighborhood. We also wanted to highlight the growing concept of bike share as a means of getting around, which at the time was operated by Alaska Airlines.

THE 101
A styled wedding editorial for THE 101.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This Seattle editorial photography project was coordinated and conducted for THE 101, which at the time was Seattle’s newest urban wedding venue. I had a total of 2 weeks to pull this shoot and all its contributors together, and could not be more thrilled about how it turned out. It was originally a project under my wedding photography brand, Jacquelyn Portolese Photograpy. However, due to its unique editorial nature, I believe it deserves a seat at Jakfruit Creative as well.
I was asked to produce a styled wedding editorial featuring local vendors and the space's potential. Since fall was just around the corner, I went in a seasonal direction. With tones and accents familiar to autumn/Halloween, it gave the venue some seasonally appropriate content. It took 4 hours from set up to tear down. Additionally, I hired professional models from TCM for this editorial and styled the table.
INSIDE THE PROJECT
A LOOK INSIDE HOW THE PROJECT WAS STYLED AND PHOTOGRAPHED
The wedding venue editorial for THE 101 was one of my favorite creative challenges and ultimately a race against the clock. Coordinating such a last minute editorial with 10+ vendors over the course of 2 weeks during peak wedding season is seriously no easy task. Shooting day of required a lot of jumping back and forth between styling, directing, and shooting throughout the space. With a model budget that only afforded us two hours and a strict pick up time for our rentals, my very small team had to make the best of its time building, styling, shooting, and tearing down in just 4 hours total.
The Models
Brent and Sydney of TCM Models did such an amazing job pretending to be married. "Wow babe, you look so beautiful! I'm so surprised!" Brent would joke as we staged their "first look." I generally prefer to work with real people rather than professional models, but the short notice and need for two people to be comfortable with getting cozy with one another left me with little choice than to consult with my friends over at TCM. Fortunately, working with these two was such a blast and their chemistry on camera was amazing. Of all four model agencies I contacted, TCM was the most communicative, reasonably priced and pleasant to work with.
Special thanks to The Dress Theory for providing us with this stunning Rue De Seine Bridal gown, and H. Bailey Boutique, neighbors of THE 101, for loaning out the suit.
THE FLORALS
If I was having a wedding of my own, I would definitely hire my girl LZ of Moon Bloom Floral to do my florals. I have had the pleasure of working with her several times over the years and she never ceases to amaze me with her talent! She even did the flowers for my best friend’s wedding. She is my go to gal for collaboration when it comes to floral design, and I am so happy to have had her on my team for this project.
THE TABLE
Something I love about this kind of content creation is it gives me an opportunity to do some personal styling. This was my first editorial table I have ever designed, and pulling decor accessories (skulls, brassware, etc.) from Modern Nest Northwest made for a fun scavenger hunt. Pedersen's Event Rentals provided us with the lovely dishware, table and gorgeous vineyard chairs. Special thanks to LZ of Moon Bloom Floral for these stunning arrangements. The color tones exceeded my expectations, and I really think the autumn with a soft Halloween mood shines through in our creation.
CAKES
When I first saw Amber of Sift & Gather's Instagram and all her amazing cakes, I just had to have her for this project. She was up to her ears in wedding cake orders, yet still made this stunning black and gold cake for us. The pictures don't do it justice. I got to take that sucker home and eat it, too! It was amazing!
A cheese wheel cake is something I've always dreamed of one day having at my own wedding. It really screams "autumn" to me, and as someone who isn't normally in to sweets, it always seemed like a fun step outside of tradition. I had a really difficult time tracking someone down to make one for me, so I tracked down four reasonably sized and priced cheese wheels and made one myself just for this shoot.
STATIONARY
Katie of Ink & Sable is a connection I have from high school. She is well known in the city for her gorgeous wedding invitation suites and fine art calligraphy, and I am so fortunate that she was able to create this stunning black and gold piece despite it being peak season.
COCKTAILS
THE 101 prides itself on the DIY aspect of their venue. Although you're free to choose whichever vendors you would like, they also offer craft cocktail services and catering right on site. This presented me with an opportunity to do some cocktail styling as well.
